Problem States for Master of Arts in Professional Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy
Arkansas: requires 30 hours to be taken in residence. In addition the Arkansas state board of education has not approved Liberty’s Counseling programs for it’s citizens. Therefore Arkansas residents are not permitted to enroll in a licensure program.
California: Liberty University’s counseling programs are not currently approved to provide courses for California. Consequently, California students should pursue studies in programs approved by their state.
Illinois: requires 24 hours to be taken in residence. Thus, our standard online degree format does not meet the residency requirements for this state.
Kansas: requires 30 hours to be taken in residence. Thus, our standard online degree format does not meet the residency requirements within this state.
Mississippi: is a problem state for the MA in Marriage and Family Therapy only. Mississippi will not accept Liberty’s MAFT degree because Liberty’s program is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Therapy Education, nor is the university currently seeking this accreditation. Mississippi’s regulations do not indicate that this policy will prevent a student in Liberty’s MA in Professional Counseling from receiving licensure, but students must verify this information with the state.
Missouri: does not accept external degrees for licensure.
New Hampshire: Students are required a minimum of one academic year of full-time academic graduate study in mental health counseling in residence of the institute granting the degree.
New Jersey: The state of New Jersey has made changes to their licensure laws that will directly affect your studies with Liberty University. Specifically, the board of professional and marriage and family counseling has adopted a regulation effective Oct 5, 2012 that states that anyone applying for LPC or LMFT licensure in NJ will need to have graduated from a CACREP accredited school (Section 13:34-11.2. ) Further, they will require that the 60 master level credits in counseling (or related field) that are from non-CACREP accredited programs must be completed prior to October 2012 in order to be accepted for licensure.
Because Liberty’s counseling program is NOT CACREP accredited, this means that you will be directly affected. At this point you have the following options:
1. Finish all the coursework and practicum/internship requirements by October 2012 or
2. Transfer to a CACREP accredited program.
This is all the information we are able to provide you. We encourage you to write/email the New Jersey board of counseling to voice your concerns and opinions at http://www.state.nj.us/oag/ca/mft/mftrules.htm
New York: According to the state of New York, degrees from programs outside the state of New York will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Please consult the New York State Education Department for more information.
Oregon: does not accept non-CACREP approved online degrees
